Kaylee & Clint’s Black Rock Beach Engagement Session: Speed Dating, Two Dogs, and a Golden Hour After the Rain
Kaylee & Clint’s Black Rock Beach Engagement Session: Speed Dating, Two Dogs, and a Golden Hour After the Rain

Some love stories start with a grand gesture. Kaylee and Clint’s started at a speed-dating event in Murray Hill. When I asked them what their favorite part of their relationship is, they said it’s the ease of their personalities clicking. They get along so well, and they share so many wants, needs, and dreams. Isn’t that the kind of connection you hope to find? <3
On October 11, 2026, I met them at Black Rock Beach for an engagement session that felt like them: relaxed, romantic, and full of joyful little moments. Jade and Ruby, their two dogs, joined us for part of it, too, with friends along to wrangle the pups while we worked. We photographed just before and during golden hour, after a full week of rain finally cleared the night before. The result? A beautiful beach evening and a whole lot of heartfelt images.
A speed-dating start and an easy kind of together
Speed dating might sound like a scene from a rom-com, but the sweetest part of Kaylee and Clint’s story is what came after that first meeting. Ask them what they love most about being together, and the answer is the ease of it: how naturally their personalities click, how well they get along, and how much they share when it comes to the things they want, need, and dream about.
That comfortable connection makes such a difference in front of the camera. Instead of asking a couple to perform a pose, I can give them a little direction, then leave room for what feels like them: a grin, a hand squeeze, a quiet hug, or a kiss they don’t need to overthink. My husband and I have spent nearly two decades photographing and filming couples, and the moments that move us most are often the ones that unfold when people simply get to be together.

The weather finally gave us a golden-hour window!
Florida weather can keep everyone guessing. Kaylee and Clint had a full week of rain behind them, and the skies cleared the night before their session. By the time we met at Black Rock Beach, the weather was beautiful, and we got to enjoy that dreamy light just before and during golden hour.
Why do photographers love that time of day? As the sun gets lower, the light is softer and warmer than the bright overhead sun. It can create a gentle glow around hair and shoulders, bring out natural skin tones, and give the beach and sky a warm, cinematic feel. The changing light also gives a session variety: brighter, open-sky portraits early on, then softer, more romantic frames as sunset approaches.
Golden hour isn’t a guarantee of a glowing, cloud-free sky, of course, and it doesn’t need to be. Clouds can add beautiful texture, while changing conditions can make a session feel wonderfully dramatic. We stay flexible, keep comfort and safety in mind, and make the most of the light we have.

Rain plans for Florida engagement photos
If you’re planning engagement photos in Florida, you may be asking: What happens if it rains? First, take a breath! A forecast can change, and a cloudy day isn’t automatically a bad photo day. I recommend keeping an eye on the forecast together, talking through a backup date when possible, and making a decision based on the conditions, not just the first raindrop in an app.
Light cloud cover may be perfectly workable. But if there’s lightning, heavy rain, unsafe wind, or conditions that make travel or the session uncomfortable, safety comes first. We can talk through options and decide whether to adjust the plan or reschedule. For a beach session, it’s also wise to check the location’s current access guidance and conditions before you go.
And if the rain clears just in time? You may get a gorgeous evening like Kaylee and Clint did. We can’t promise a particular sunset, but we can show up ready to make the most of the moment.
Bring the pups, just plan their part of the session
Jade and Ruby added so much personality to Kaylee and Clint’s session! If your dogs are part of your story, bringing them along can make your engagement photos feel even more personal. A little planning helps keep the experience relaxed for everyone:
- Bring leashes and check the current rules for your chosen location before the session.
- Ask a helper to come along. Kaylee and Clint brought friends who acted as wranglers for Jade and Ruby while the session was underway, and it made all the difference. A helper can keep an eye on the dogs while you have a few photos together without them.
- Pack treats, water, and poo bags. The unglamorous essentials are the ones you’ll be happiest to have on you.
- Plan the timing. We can photograph the dogs during one part of the session, then let your helper take them home or give them a break.
- Keep it flexible. Sniff breaks and wiggly greetings are part of the fun!
Want to know whether a location works for your four-legged family members? Let’s talk it through before session day. We’ll check the current guidance and make a plan that puts the dogs’ comfort first.

Beach engagement photo ideas with a Florida sunset vibe
A beach session can be so much more than standing at the water’s edge, and the most memorable engagement photo ideas often come from mixing up the scenery and movement. We can try a walking shot along the shore, a close-up that tells the story through a ring or handhold, a cozy bench moment, or a playful twirl as the sky changes color.
For wardrobe inspiration, think about emerald, sapphire, and deep amethyst. These rich jewel tones can look striking against a beach’s warm sunset colors, creating a little contrast while still feeling romantic and natural. You might choose one jewel-toned piece, coordinate colors without matching exactly, or add a subtle accessory in one of these shades. The goal isn’t to follow a strict formula. It’s to wear something that feels like you and lets you move comfortably.
For a little extra variety, bring a second layer or accessory if you’d like. A veil bow, for example, adds a lovely detail without taking over the whole look. Kaylee’s pearl-studded white bow was a sweet personal touch, and I loved the way it showed up in the photos.

The little details tell part of the story
I always leave room for close-up details during an engagement session. They help tell the story in a different way: a hand resting on a shoulder, a ring catching the light, the texture of a shirt, or a tiny flourish in someone’s hair. They’re not just pretty extras; they’re pieces of the memory you might be excited to look back on later.
Kaylee’s ring, resting against Clint’s blue linen shirt, made a lovely detail portrait, and a quiet pause between the bigger, sweeping beach views.

A beach session, their way
One of my favorite things about working as a Jacksonville wedding photographer is helping couples make their session feel personal instead of overly posed. Kaylee and Clint brought their easy connection, their shared story, and their pups. We brought the cameras, a little direction, and space for genuine moments to happen.
If you’re planning your own session, you don’t need to arrive with a list of perfect poses or a picture-perfect weather forecast. You just need to show up as yourselves. I’ll help with the rest, whether that means gentle prompts, a dog-friendly plan, or figuring out what to do if Florida has other ideas for the sky.

Next stop: the wedding day!
